Challenge

The capstone project for the course was for learners to create a personal digital portfolio. Learners had no experience creating websites before. This video served to demonstrate how to quickly and easily setup a portfolio using Google Sites.

Solution

As the instructor for the course, I knew that learners were unfamiliar with Google Sites and that they'd be more likely to get started if they had a short tutorial from their instructor rather than a random tutorial I found online.

I first created a script for the course. Then I recorded the video with Camtasia and then separetly recorded the audio with Camtasia. I edited and synched the audio and video in Camtasia. Finally, I used Camtasia to add captions, which can be toggled on/off using the player settings.

After uploading the video directly from Camtasia to YouTube, I embedded and linked the video into Canvas, the learning management system, for learners to easily access.

Results

Creating this video enabled me to utilize features of Camtasia that I hadn't used prior, such as zooming, panning, highlighting, blurring, and annotating.

The development of this course taught me the importance of planning out a project with extreme details. For example, each cursor move that I made needed to be planned out. I also realized the benefit of recording the audio and video separately. Because the audio and video were on separate tracks, I had more control over each which allowed me to create more seemless edits.
