Job Aid Sample 1
"Embed Flip into Canvas"
Tools: Canva, Snagit, Flip, and Canvas LMS
Time: 6 hours
Client: personal portfolio piece for IDOL courses Academy
Collaborators: independent project
Challenge
Flip (formerly Flipgrid) is a popular tool used to empower voices of all learners through the use of audio and video. Additionally, the Canvas learning management system is widely used and where learners frequently find coursework. To mitigate the need for learners to navigate away from the Canvas webpage, instructors can embed Flip video topics directly into a page on Canvas. However, working with HTML can be intimidating for some users, so this job aid shows how easy it is to embed HTML code using built-in features of Canvas.
Solution
This handout serves as a quick reference guide to instructors as they streamline their courses by removing the need for learners to navigate away from the learning management system. Learners remain on the course website and can quickly and easily interact with videos.
I created this handout using Canva, Snagit, Canvas, and Flip. I first outlined the necessary steps and then took screenshots of the appropriate graphics on Canvas and Flip. I used Snagit to highlight aspects of the images before importing them into Canva.
This project underwent multiple iterations. I submitted two of those iterations to an instructional design mentor/coach for feedback. I implemented the feedback, which addressed using uniform colors, removing redundant text, and rearranging items to direct learners attention to the steps.
I also created a version of the job aid using Scribehow. This tool enabled me to perform the steps on my computer. The program recorded the steps, automatically took screenshots, and then I made final edits to the process. Follow this link for another version of the job aid, which allows users to zoom in & out of the images to get a better perspective on how to navigate the pages if they're unfamiliar with the page layout. Additionally, I exported the procedure as a PDF, which is viewable here.
Results
This job aid is a personal portfolio piece and has not yet been implemented.Â
The development of this job aid offered an opportunity to create a learning solution for real-world knowledge and performance gaps that I've encountered as an instructor at the secondary and higher ed levels. Developing this piece taught me the importance of providing clear text and visual directions so that learners can quickly glance at the job aid and understand how to proceed.
